It’s common to freak out a little when the weather doesn’t end up being what you thought it was going to be and you’re about to get photos done. But if you are getting married that day, there’s no way to reschedule, right?
This rainy spring wedding at New York City Hall was proof that embracing the unexpected doesn’t take away from your wedding day – it reveals it. It’s often in the unplanned moments that the most honest, emotional, and enduring memories are made, especially when you are on cloud nine from marrying the love of your life.
Coco and Kevin’s energy was what made our time together seamless. I almost forgot how crummy the weather was because I was so drawn to their energy, their smiles, and their joy being together and celebrating their love. The bouquet by Raving Flamingo Flowers was the absolute perfect pop of color that matched Coco and Kevin’s happy energy. We embraced the wind, the rain, the gloominess of the clouds, and the little bit of sun that came through towards the end of our session.
There are plenty of spots to take photos around the areas of Civic Center and Financial District (FiDi) surrounding the New York City Hall. All the buildings make you feel like you are a part of something so big, yet being immersed in the grandness of it all still feels intimate. This is why I wasn’t very concerned about the weather – my priority was documenting Coco and Kevin and the joy of getting married, rain or shine. The buildings around them were an impactful and important element to show where they got married. The architecture adds scale, texture, and emotions to make their photos feel lived-in.
I used the towering buildings surrounding them to create images that feel cinematic and intimate at the same time: two people holding onto each other in the middle of a city that never slows down. What an honor it was to have met Coco and Kevin and have the opportunity to document this time of their lives. I almost feel like the weather this day was a blessing in disguise that grew my appreciation for the simple things. Rain has a way of slowing New York down just enough to notice the little things: hugs to keep each other warm, laughter echoing between buildings in the Financial District, and dancing in the rain. Their city hall wedding wasn’t about perfection – it was about presence. And honestly, this 3-season spring day made it feel even more like New York.
